Catalyst Cooling

CATCOOL® Catalyst Cooling was developed by Linde specifically to speed up cooling of the process catalyst using evaporated liquid nitrogen. This cooling is needed prior to regeneration of the catalyst, a process that can take days when cooling from 500°C to 40°C. CATCOOL allows refineries to quickly bring reactors off line so that catalysts can be regenerated.

But speed alone is not enough, because cooling down too quickly without accurate control could cause physical damage to the catalyst carrier. Using CATCOOL, catalyst cooling time can be safely reduced to less than one third of the time needed with traditional methods. The procedure includes control of the cooling rate temperature differential between the reactor and incoming gas, and the minimum temperature of the nitrogen gas entering the reactor.

Linde's services include:

  • Simulation software that models nitrogen consumption, bed temperature, and time to cool the catalyst to the desired set point.
  • Engineering staff for assessment and field supervision services
  • Rental equipment
