The production and utilization of mineral wool generates many different kinds of waste products that must be deposited or recycled. From an environmental point of view, mineral wool waste is a big problem because it doesn't decompose. Several governments have decided to forbid the mineral wool producers from depositing their waste. In countries where it is still allowed, the cost is increasing annually.
The "Oxy-Waste" application, developed by Linde, makes it possible to recycle mineral wool waste back into the furnace. This is done by injecting waste through the center of a specially designed oxy-fuel burner. Thus, the waste is recycled at the same time as energy is provided to increase production capacity. Another benefit is the reduction of raw material consumption due to using the recycled waste.
The benefits from using "Oxy-Waste" are:
- Reduced waste recycling costs
- Coke replacement
- Increased melting capacity
- Operating flexibility
- Improved process control
- Reduced flue gas volumes and emissions
