Oxygen makes up 20.99% of the earth's atmosphere and in a pure state, is used in medical facilities and patient’s homes in order to therapeutically increase the oxygen levels of humans. Oxygen itself is non-flammable but causes combustible materials to burn vigorously and is a highly oxidizing gas.
Medical Application: Widely practiced and developing medical uses of oxygen in anesthesia or inhalation therapy include its use during surgery to maintain tissue oxygenation under anesthesia; for resuscitation; in mechanical lung ventilation for treatment of respiratory depression; in the treatment of such diseases as chronic obstructive lung disease, pneumoconiosis, pneumonia, myocardial infarction, and pulmonary embolism; for the newborn experiencing respiratory distress syndrome; in the treatment of respiratory burns or poisoning by carbon monoxide and other chemical substances; and in hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
