USP Nitrous Oxide

Medical Nitrous Oxide is a colorless, odorless, sweet tasting anesthetic that does support combustion in flammable materials but is non-flammable itself. It is shipped in liquified form at a pressure of 745 psig and has been used in cryosurgery and for other freezing applications.

Medical Application: Nitrous Oxide is primarily used as an analgesic and in combination with one or more agents for the production of balanced anesthesia. In concentrations above 20%, it will produce intense analgesia. Concentrations over 40% will produce loss of consciousness. Nitrous oxide lacks irritating characteristics and therefore does not stimulate respiratory tract secretions. Breathing is neither enhanced nor depressed. It has no affect on cardiac rate or rhythm, myocardial contractility, blood pressure, or liver or kidney function as long as adequate concentrations of oxygen are administered.
